In a move to make in-car experiences more intuitive, Audi is upgrading its voice control system with AI capabilities. This new feature, available in select Audi models starting July 2024, allows drivers to interact with their car using natural language.
Focus on User Experience and Safety
The key benefit of this upgrade is the ability to use everyday language for common tasks. Drivers can ask questions and give commands in a natural way, keeping their focus on the road. This integration aims to improve safety by minimizing distractions while driving.
What can you ask your car?
For now, the system focuses on general knowledge questions alongside existing functionalities like controlling music, navigation, and climate. Future iterations could allow users to ask car-related questions as well.
Technical details and Availability
The upgraded voice control system leverages ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, accessed through Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service or Cerence Chat Pro depending on the car model. Data privacy is a priority, with all questions and responses deleted after processing.
This feature will be available in roughly two million Audi models from 2021 onwards, equipped with the MIB 3 infotainment system. Future models with the E3 1.2 electronics architecture will also benefit from this integration.
The Future of AI in Cars
Audi sees AI as a key technology for enhancing the in-car experience. This is just the first step, with the potential to expand functionalities and provide even more driver convenience in the future.
